Hearing Health : 5 Things you didn't know about ear wax

So what are the 5 things you didn't know about ear wax?

1. Earwax gets out through the movement of the ear cell.

The cells inside the ear canal are unique in the human body - they migrate. "You could put an ink dot on the eardrum and watch it move over a few weeks and it would be 'carried out' by the movement of the cells." according to Prof Shakeel Saeed at London's Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear hospital. Read more.....

2.  Earwax has microbial properties

image: BBC Health

Ear wax contains waxy oils but much of it is made up of keratinocytes - dead skin cells. The rest of cerumen - to give it its technical name - is a mixture of substances.

 3. You can differentiate earwax to asian and non asian

Asian and non-Asian ears produce different types of earwax according to scientists at the Monell Institute in Philadelphia. Chromosome 16 is home to the "wet" or "dry" gene for earwax - with the wet variant dominating. READ MORE HERE...

4. A vaccumm is better than a syringed

Carrie Roberts is in her 40s and has an ear wax problem. She had her ears syringed at the GPs several times, tried hot oil with no success - and ended up with both ears blocked.Ms Roberts decided to pay for micro-suction treatment, where the ear canal is cleaned with an instrument like a tiny vacuum cleaner. Prof Saeed prefers this method to syringing. "With syringing you are going in 'blind' - not under direct vision. If you use water it has to get past the wax and come back, bringing the wax with it. Read MORE HERE

5.  Earwax can be a polluntant monitor

Earwax, like many other bodily secretions, can show traces of certain toxins in the body such as heavy metals. But it's an odd place to look and no more reliable than a simple blood test.
There are also some rare metabolic disorders that affect earwax. The most notable earwax scientific discovery of recent times is that of a 24cm wax earplug from a blue whale.
Unlike humans which shed their earwax and dead skin cells, filter-feeding whales retain their earwax, recording life events similar to the way tree rings reveal arid and wet seasons during its lifetime.
The earwax was analysed by Sascha Usenko, a environmental scientist at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. He and his team found that during the 12-year-old male whale's life it came into contact with 16 different pollutants such as pesticides.
There was a peak of exposure during the first year of life - suggesting that these were transferred from its mother either in the womb or through her milk.
Now share this to your friends and family.

What causes hearing loss in Children?

Hi there everyone, welcome back to Hearing Aid blog. Today we will be discussing on what causes hearing loss in children?

Before we go directly into the causes of hearing loss in Children, let us look at some statistics.
Two to 3 children out of 1,000 in the U.S. are born deaf or with some loss of hearing, according to the National Institutes of Health. Most states test the hearing of newborns, and if there is a hearing problem, another test is done within a few weeks. Early treatment is important.  Read more here....
That's a big number. 3 out of 1000 in US.

Now let us look at what causes hearing loss in Children.

What causes hearing loss in Children?
  • Otitis media. This middle ear infection happens often in young children because their Eustachian tubes (the tubes that connect the middle ear to the nose) are not fully developed. Fluid builds up behind the eardrum and can become infected. Even if there is no pain or infection, the fluid can affect hearing if it stays there, at least temporarily. In severe and long-lasting cases, otitis media can lead to permanent hearing loss.
  • Problems at birth. Some children are born with hearing problems. More than half of hearing problems in children born with them are due to genetics. Others happen during the pregnancy or from prenatal care. Hearing loss can also happen when a pregnant woman develops certain conditions such as diabetes or toxemia. Being premature also raises a child's chance for hearing problems.
  • Illness or injury. Many conditions can cause hearing problems in young children, including illnesses such as meningitis, encephalitis, measles, chickenpox, and the flu. Head injuries, very loud noises, and certain medications can also cause hearing loss. Read more here.....
Hope you learn something today about the cause of hearing loss.

15 frequently asked questions (FAQ) about hearing aid

1.How can hearing aid helps?

It helps you by improving your speech and hearing comprehension of people. A hearing aid help magnifies sound vibrations that enters the ear.

2.Do all hearing aid works the same way?

Hearing aids work differently depending on the electronics used. The two main types of electronics are analog and digital.

Analog aids convert sound waves into electrical signals, which are amplified. Analog/adjustable hearing aids are custom built to meet the needs of each user. The aid is programmed by the manufacturer according to the specifications recommended by your audiologist. Analog/programmable hearing aids have more than one program or setting. An audiologist can program the aid using a computer, and the user can change the program for different listening environments—from a small, quiet room to a crowded restaurant to large, open areas, such as a theater or stadium. Analog/programmable circuitry can be used in all types of hearing aids. Analog aids usually are less expensive than digital aids.
Digital aids convert sound waves into numerical codes, similar to the binary code of a computer, before amplifying them. Because the code also includes information about a sound’s pitch or loudness, the aid can be specially programmed to amplify some frequencies more than others. Digital circuitry gives an audiologist more flexibility in adjusting the aid to a user’s needs and to certain listening environments. These aids also can be programmed to focus on sounds coming from a specific direction. Digital circuitry can be used in all types of hearing aids.

3. Which hearing aid will work best for me?

The hearing aid that will work best for you depends on the kind and severity of your hearing loss. If you have a hearing loss in both of your ears, two hearing aids are generally recommended because two aids provide a more natural signal to the brain. Hearing in both ears also will help you understand speech and locate where the sound is coming from.

You and your audiologist should select a hearing aid that best suits your needs and lifestyle. Price is also a key consideration because hearing aids range from hundreds to several thousand dollars. Similar to other equipment purchases, style and features affect cost. However, don’t use price alone to determine the best hearing aid for you. Just because one hearing aid is more expensive than another does not necessarily mean that it will better suit your needs.

A hearing aid will not restore your normal hearing. With practice, however, a hearing aid will increase your awareness of sounds and their sources. You will want to wear your hearing aid regularly, so select one that is convenient and easy for you to use. Other features to consider include parts or services covered by the warranty, estimated schedule and costs for maintenance and repair, options and upgrade opportunities, and the hearing aid company’s reputation for quality and customer service.

4. Are there different styles of hearing aids?

Yes There are 3 types
  1. Behind the ear
  2. In the ear
  3. In the canal

5. How many years should I expect my hearing aid to last?

3 to 5 years

6. How do I know if the battery is in the hearing aid correctly?

Just like any normal battery, the hearing aid battery have a positive and negative side. In general there will be a '+' sign on the battery door indicating the positive side should be up.

7.How do I turn on my hearing aid ?

All you need to do is to close the battery door in order to turn on the hearing aid.

 8. Is it ok for me to sleep with my hearing aid in?

To conserve the battery life of your hearing aid, I would advise you to remove the hearing aid when you sleep.

9. How do I conserve the battery life of my hearing aid.

Open the battery door of your hearing aid, this is to make sure that the battery is not drained where it allow a more economical use of your hearing aid. Another reason why opening the battery conserve more battery life is to allow air into your hearing aid where it prevents moisture to build up.

10.What about if I go swimming, can i wear my hearing aid along?

No, although many hearing aids are water resistance, to ensure a long lasting hearing aid, remove the hearing aid before you swim.

11.How do i clean my hearing aid?

You can use tissue and wipe the hearing aids.

12. Why is my hearing aid squealing?

The squealing sound is called feedback. Feedback occurs because something has changed the way the hearing aid fits in your ear. It might be because your hearing aid is dirty need to be cleaned, or there is debris in your ears.

13.How can I eliminate the hearing aid squealing sound?

- Clean the hearing aid, or

- Clean your ears or,

- Consult your hearing care provider

14.Why is my hearing aid beeping?

The beeping sound can indicate that your battery is getting low, or the hearing program is changing, or the volume of the hearing aid has change.

15. What questions should I ask before buying a hearing aid?

  • What features is useful to me?
  • What is the total cost of the hearing aid?
  • Do the benefits of newer technologies outweigh the higher costs?
  • Is there a trial period to test the hearing aids?
  • What fees are nonrefundable if the aids are returned after the trial period?
  • How long is the warranty? Can it be extended?
  • Does the warranty cover future maintenance and repairs?
  • Can the audiologist make adjustments and provide servicing and minor repairs?
  • Will loaner aids be provided when repairs are needed?
  • What instruction does the audiologist provides
